June 3, 2012 after 5:00 pm Youth Star Track Event
A Venus Transit will occur on June 5th after 5:00pm till sunset. This is a once in a life time event, since the next one is going to be in 100 years. Dallas Youth Volunteer Association is organizing an education event on June 5th from 5:30pm to 9:30pm at Russell Creek Park in Plano (near the North West side athletic field). There will be several amateur astronomers and astronomy professors on site to support the event. Several telescopes with solar filters will be setup to view the transit as well as Sun spots and solar flares. 2012 is one of the most intensive solar maximum years, meaning the Sun is very active right now. While observing the transit, one can also view the sun spots (most are larger than the size of the Earth!) and solar flares (the original of solar storms). After sunset, the telescopes will be pointed towards planets and stars. The youth group will be on hand to talk to the kids. There will also be some solar shades ($2 each, can be used to look at the Sun directly) and ice cold drinks available for purchase. All proceeds will go to Collin Oaks Senior living center. Please bring your family and friends and come out to enjoy this once in a life time event!! More info:

Enrolment eligibility: Children 5 years old and up, all adults

School calendar: 2 semesters a year (Fall and Spring) total 30 weeks Sunday.
